Description

Russula sp-IN13 is a mycorrhizal mushroom that can be found in the summer in woodland settings. It seems to fruit in clusters and has been reported growing adjacent to Bitternut Hickory, American Hophornbeam, Northern Red Oak, Ash, Chinkapin Oak, Elm, Eastern Red Cedar and Black Oak.

The caps are lumpy and yellow when fresh becoming lighter colored and cracked with age. The gills are serrated (finely saw-toothed) and fluoresce neon green under UV light. The whole mushroom seems to bruise brown or brownish-orange when handled. The taste is peppery/spicy (acrid).

Growing gregariously and in clusters (but not fused) on mixed oak/hickory woodland ridge adjacent to large river (Missouri), next to Northern Red Oak, American Hophornbeam, Shagbark Hickory, Black Oak and Eastern Red Cedar trees.

  • Pileipellis cracking on larger specimens.
  • Lamellae lightly serrated, bruising orangish-brown when damaged.
  • Stipe lightly bruising orange (with time).

  • Growing gregariously (paired but not fused) in open mixed oak/hickory woodland ridge.
  • Nearby Trees: Bitternut Hickory, American Hophornbeam, Northern Red Oak, Ash, Chinkapin Oak, Elm, and Black Oak.
  • Cap bald with minor rose comb mutation, and sturdy (for a Russula). Pileipellis easily peeling 1/4 to the center.
  • Gills sturdy, but brittle.
  • Stipe white slightly bruising brownish.
  • Smell: Not distinctive.
  • Taste: Bitter
  • KOH: Slight light yellow on pileipellis, and faintly darkening stipe.
  • Ammonia: Negative
  • UV: gills fluorescing under 365nm light.
